Application of the Environmental Decision Support System in the Ecosystem of Streams of Crete (Expert System-Crete(ES-CR))

The subproject «Application of the Environmental System of Supporting Decisions Expert System in the ecosystems of the rivers of Crete Expert System-Crete», is  relevant to the administration of those river ecosystems in Crete, of permanent or periodical flow, which are receivers of important quantities of nutritional substances, like ions of nitrogen and phosphorus. Those substances are basic elements of the fertilizers and of household or urban sludge and the result of their inflow in the surface water is accompanied by the eutrophication effect, an effect that reduces the water quality and its biodiversity as well.

The subproject that we suggest, targets to the creation of a highly useful tool for the administration of these downgraded ecosystems. This tool, that is missing not only from Crete, but the rest of Greece too, will be an Environmental System of Supporting Decisions ESSD, in other words, it will be a computational model, totally adjusted to the distinctivenesses of the natural environment of Crete. It will actually

provide an aid for the supervising  commissions of water administration, so that, they will be able to use the minimum possible information to:

  • Evaluate the state of a river
  • Sort the problems
  • Discover their causes
  • Select one of the suggested appropriate solutions

This subproject, is actually an evolvement of the European project STREAMES (STream REAch Management: anExpert System), which will be completed on February of 2004 and it will produce an important product: an Environmental System of Supporting Decisions ESSD, – Expert System (ES), which will be the very first tool for the administration of the Mediterranean rivers, that accept nutritional substances. It is predicted that the initial product will be very efficient for the Mediterranean area; however we believe that it is possible to show some weaknesses in its application, mainly in the area of Crete. The main reason for that is the fact that some parameters of the natural environment in the Eastern Mediterranean may vary significantly.

With the help of the subproject that we suggest, it will become possible to evaluate the suitability of the initial ES, in the Ecosystems of the rivers of Crete, and after that, with the appropriate adjustments and improvements, to perfectly adjust it to the conditions of the wider area. This way, the better functionality and efficiency of ES will be ensured, since it’s a high priority for both the Greek and European environment administration policy, to deal with the surface water of our area in an appropriate and immediate way.
